It is the first commercial gasoline engine in the world to employ compression ignition, in which the fuel-air mixture ignites spontaneously when compressed by the piston. The proprietary combustion method, Spark Controlled Compression Ignition, maximizes the zone in which compression ignition is possible and achieves a seamless transition between compression ignition and spark ignition, two previously unsurmounted hurdles that kept the technology out of commercial engine.
So what does all that mean? In essence, the SKYACTIV®-X engine combines the advantages of gasoline and diesel engines to achieve outstanding environmental performance, power, and acceleration performance. It also improves engine efficiency up to 20–30 percent over the current SKYACTIV®-G engine.
The SKYACTIV-X® engine is only one part of a comprehensive plan by Mazda. Another key aspect of Sustainable Zoom-Zoom 2030 is a next-generation vehicle platform, the development of which began by reviewing every aspect from the viewpoint of comprehensive vehicle optimization. The resulting platform is more comfortable and more responsive, taking less of a tiring toll on drivers.
