When you start researching which Mazda vehicle is right for you, you’ll see “i-ACTIVSENSE®” come up a lot. So what is it? i-ACTIVSENSE® is the Mazda brand’s advanced suite of innovative safety technologies that you can find in vehicles like the 2017 Mazda3 and the 2017 Mazda6. A combination of active and pre-crash safety features provide peace of mind on the open road.

Active safety features are those that help drivers to recognize potential hazards before they cause trouble. Mazda Radar Cruise Control (MRCC) is one such feature. Using millimeter wave radar, MRCC judges the relative speed and distance of the car ahead of you. Using that information, and working within a set speed range, MRCC makes automatic adjustments to maintain a safe following distance. The Rear Vehicle Monitoring System (RVM) is another helpful feature, using a rear bumper-mounted quasi-milliwave radar to measure the distance between your car and cars approaching from behind or in neighboring lanes. When you go to change lanes, RVM will alert you if there’s a possibility of a collision.

Pre-crash safety features work to avert collisions, or reduce their severity in cases where they cannot be avoided. While many automakers include features to avoid collisions on the highway, less thought is typically given to low-speed situations. That’s not the case with Mazda. Smart City Brake Support (SCBS) helps Mazda drivers avoid frontal collisions when traveling in urban areas or congested traffic. Using a laser sensor mounted on the windshield, SCBS senses the car ahead. If it identifies a risk for collision, SCBS readies the brake system to deliver maximum stopping power when the driver hits the brakes. If the driver fails to act, SCBS applies the brakes and reduces engine output.
