Looking for a safe car? Look no further. The 2016 Mazda CX-5 compact crossover has been named a 2016 Top Safety Pick+ by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS)—the highest honor from the renowned institute. To earn this prestigious rating, a vehicle has to achieve the highest rating—“Good”—in five body-structure categories, including small-overlap crash-testing. The vehicles must also earn an advanced rating in available collision-prevention technologies like automatic braking. This requirement is a new edition to the 2016 evaluations.

The IIHS put the the 2016 Mazda CX-5 to the test to arrive at their conclusion, subjecting the automobile to a veritable gauntlet of rollover and collision tests. Of these, the small-overlap front crash test was one of the most stringent—and one of the newest additions to the process. Accord to the IIHS, small-overlap crashes put more force onto a smaller piece of the car’s structure than other current frontal-collision tests, hence the added focus.

Despite the stringent requirements, the Mazda CX-5 performed admirably. Jim O’Sullivan, president and CEO, Mazda North American Operations (MNAO), was proud of the accomplishment—and rightly so—saying, “We pride ourselves on the engineering that went into making our vehicles among the lightest and most efficient in their segments, but our SKYACTIV Technology has also helped us design and build some of the safest vehicles on the road as well. It means a lot that Mazda vehicles are stylish and fun to drive. It means much more that we don’t have to sacrifice any of that style for the safety features that help keep Mazda drivers and passengers safe.”

The 2016 Mazda CX-5 is the third Mazda vehicle to be named an IIHS 2016 Top Safety Pick+, joining the ranks of the Mazda3 compact sedan and five-door and Mazda6 midsize sedan.
